EU MEPs outline a course change in digital policy. They demand independence from US infrastructures and more domestic AI and open source.

Here is a way to use open data law to take individual action:

IT guy here, since more and more services have moved to be web based services rather than being local programs means that we need less policy management for local machines, this finally loosen the grip that Microsoft has had on the market through Active Directory and 365.

It is still needed, but to a lesser extent, which opens the door for competitors, and new concepts.

As an IT guy who started just before the big cloud shift I miss on-prem hardware, but the cloud has definately opened new concepts that Europe can use to take back our infrastructure from the claws of the US tech sector and bring it home.

I see a future where European governments and companies will host their own cloud services on a combination of their own hardware and a distributed platform.

the hardest part is the dependence on Active Directory, which almost all governments and big companies use it.

yeah, I know there are open source solutions for this, but they are not as easy to manage as Active Directory.

Yeah, though with the shift of running everything in the browser these days I think we can get by with something more like an MDM, it is far easier to manage a secure part of a computer rather than securing the entire computer.

We just need to figure out a trusted way to do it on Linux and BSD so that companies and government organizations can feel confident using the system.

do you have any recommendations for good MDM software?

I have only used Mobile Iron and Intune, both American, so no.

Does that mean that decoupling is finally in sight? How long before the legislation is adopted?

Decoupling will be gradual and take many years, unless things escalate and the EU decides to decouple without an alternative in place.

That would however be extremely costly and I think they want to avoid that.

The advantage of a sudden shift is of course that change will happen faster due to necessity. But as I mentioned, at a greatly increased cost.

The question is how long will Europe stand being humiliated by Trump every second day?

In the Netherlands someone made a nice (or maybe I should say: depressing) dashboard (still beta) for the US dependency of government agencies, schools, healthcare and companies: zijnwealautonoom.nl (‘are we autonomous yet’).
Red button highlights the enormous extent to which most Dutch organisations behave like a digital colony of the US, for example screenshot shows education.

Site is down, ironic

Could have been a incorrect link, my fault. Removed the www, and it seems to work properly now

Good to see. Europe can reduce its reliance on Windows and start using European software like SUSE Linux, KDE, and Ubuntu. Also the article mentions AI: Europe has its own AI expertise, like Mistral AI, the French company.

There is also Black Forest Labs by former Stable Diffusion developers that pretty much spearhead local image generation models. For better or worse. If I remember correctly Grok Image generator uses it.

So the expertise is there, I think. The question is if we really want that. It‘s an industry by thieves for thieves.

I’m literally working on a project integrating a major European bank into a major US cloud (not my fault).

Maybe we build a new Twitter or Facebook, but we are still heavily using US cloud

As an American, this excites me. This will promote alternatives worldwide.

Yet 58% of MEPs are still on X.

https://leavex.eu/ is a useful resource for those who want to call them out on it - find the representatives from your country and parties you care for still on X, let them know what exactly they are supporting by staying there, and maybe nudge them towards something like https://eupolicy.social as a more reasonable alternative.

Remember to be polite - many of them/(the ones we care to convince) are good people who are just doing what they have been told they need to do in order to communicate with their base. They just need to realize the world has changed.

The EU already runs its own mastodon server:

https://ec.social-network.europa.eu

No need for a 3rd party alternative for EU politicians.

Germany also has their own for official accounts:
Social.bund.de

There’s not one mastodon instance for EU stuff, but rather they divide it alongside the division of powers.
https://ec.social-network.europa.eu/ is only for the European Commission and its related initiatives and officials, while https://curia.social-network.europa.eu/ is for the Court of Justice of the EU.

To my knowledge there’s no official instance for the European Parliament or its members.

I believe a good number are moving to Bluesky. However, that is still American. Hopefully, there will be a strong push for a mass exodus from X once W Social is launched.

Personally I really hope the X exodus will not be caused by new venture capitalist platform taking over, even though it might seem increasingly inevitable at this point.

I have extremely little faith in W social—they didn’t even manage to set up their temporary landing page properly, indicating strongly that this is run by capitalists rather than talented and ideologically motivated people. Apparently it’s a Bluesky fork, so I guess it will have a perceived success by running on ATProto no matter how it goes down.

So important.
But who was against a bolder agreement, with default EU (or open source, I hope) and option to opt out for special reasons, and why?

In terms of content, the report focuses on a strategic reorientation of public procurement and infrastructure. The compromise line adopted stipulates that member states can favor European tech providers in strategic sectors to systematically strengthen the technological capacity of the Community. The Greens even called for a stricter regulation here, where the use of products “Made in EU” should become the rule and exceptions would have to be explicitly justified. They also pushed for a definition for cloud infrastructure that provides for full EU jurisdiction without dependencies on third countries.

This is indeed an important point. We’re making us controllable by the US through the media platforms. Basically whoever controls the recommendation algorithm can sway public opinion one way or another, and that’s very dangerous if europe ever enters an armed conflict with the US.

Arguably the most important, in fact.

Any admistration that is not on Linux is failing their citizens.

I mean BSDs and Illumos are equally acceptable

The faster, the better.
