I never heard of it, and I tend to be frequently looking at upcoming releases. So, they failed step one in getting people to buy the thing.
My learning about a game for the first time from the shut down announcement is becoming a trend!
Itâs hard in todayâs media landscape to break through the noise.
So many games that are fun, not fantastic headliner by any means but still enjoyable games, fall through the cracks, lost in a sea of slop and asset flips.
No one wants to risk money on a mid game that has an incredibly high chance of being just another slop title so they wait for the next big blockbuster title taking over YouTube and Twitch streams or familiar titles pining for a bit of that joy they used to provide.
Modern gaming fucking sucks.

Like, those games can exist. I donât care. Nothing is inherently bad with an always-online multiplayer focused game. In fact, the game in question from the post is an always online extraction shooter.
The issue is how smaller titles just canât gain visibility in how our society is structured with the endless bombardment of advertisement and information. You just donât even hear about these games ever existing at all. Then gaming platforms are sorely lacking in proper moderation; theyâve been inundated with garbage, cheap asset-flips and abandonware meant to nickel and dime people, that keeps people averse to trying out anything that isnât from a trusted name or has managed to break out as a viral hit.
Not to even mention how the capitalist dystopia we all live in is inherently antagonistic towards pursuing or maintaining passion projects, forcing them to satisfy financial barriers placing arbitrary constraints and limitations in order to simply exist at all but Iâm digressing.
The issue is far wider in scope than simply âAAA/always-online gaming badâ
Eh. I seem to always hear about such games pretty quickly. Just maybe not as quickly as braindead executives assume.
Maybe it should be on the publisherâs shoulders to not expect a game to hit millions of concurrent players in the first week before they cancel them?

Iâm making analytical criticism of our societal structure. You seem to completely not understand the point of what Iâm saying. Like, Iâm not even disagreeing with your points. Iâm just saying youâre not engaging with my point. Youâre arguing with yourself about things I never said or even implied.

Also, youâre the odd one out here. This thread literally started about how this game was cancelled before any of us had even heard of it. Like congratulations dude but way to miss the fucking point, again.
On top of that it just seemed like it was trying to confuse people and copycat the other more popular live-service set around a giant cube.
This is why I generally avoid live services, and new releases from devs I have never heard of. For a new game I have found giving it a month or two to let the hype die down, then check if itâs still worth getting.
If people still love it, like Valheim, itâs probably a safe buy.

I have no idea what an extraction shooter is and it feels like I keep seeing news about extraction shooters shutting down not longer after being released.
Thats basically the main gameplay loops of these games.
Somebody should make some single player ones. The concept sounds fun, but I have little interest in live service stuff.
Escape From Duckov is an excellent single player parody of Escape From Tarkov, one of the most famous extraction shooters. Duckov was one of my most enjoyed games last year.
Escape From Tarkov itself has the Single Player Tarkov mod which I hear is great, but I donât own that game so canât verify.
Zero Sievert is another one, similar style to Duckov with the top down perspective and single player mode.
Iâll second Duckov! I had quite a bit of fun with it and progression is pretty solid.
witchfire is in early access but itâs a single player extraction shooter that kicks ass. gunplay on par with bungie imo
Iâve wanted this since PUBG came out. PvE with a solo focus, teams optional. Could even involve indirect PvP - canât directly attack the other players, just sabotage/score higher. I feel like thereâs really an untapped market there, but if itâs not a live service with monthly payments and cosmetics then the suits aint interested. Gag.
Try Escape from Duckov! Silly characters but the gameplay really is solid.
The Forever Winter seems to have offline single-player.

It could work. Theres that single player âmmoâ on Steam and that actually seems fun. My favorite part is looting everything I can and thats still possible in singleplayer. Maybe if it was just not live service and had PvE elements you could play with your friends it might be really auccessful. But everyone is chasing money printers now.
There are a few, Red River and Tarkov has PVE mode. Iâm also making one but not FPS.
Hmm, does Pacific Drive count as an extraction⊠wait, thereâs no shooting. And itâs kinda roguelikey. But itâs got âspawn in map, do stuff, try to get outâ nailed!
I donât play extraction shooters because it is a dumb format that encourages camping exit points instead of any other style of play. Absolutely never touching any extraction shooters unless it has randomized and multiple exits.
Iâve only seriously put any time into Matathon, but it has randomized multiple exfils, so maybe give it a try if you have interest in the genre apart from that (Iâm not sure how common it is).
Live-service games are a fucking stupid gamble. You either succeed massively amid a crowded field - or you are fucked. There is no long tail, for multiplayer-only games. Not if youâre doing modern bullshit with centralized servers and kernel anticheat and real-money charges for shit thatâs already in the game. You canât have a âcult classicâ that relies on several hundred people queuing at all times. The format demands a hit, but you cannot plan a hit, or force a hit. Not even fucking Rockstar bets the farm on their next title meeting expectations.
Just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks.
